| Databases are used to allow persistent storage of data,
relate data and enable multi user access to a data
structure. Data is a common element in nearly all
applications, so it has become quite central to nearly every
system. SQL is the most commonly used language in
RDBMS. LDAP books are also reviewed, and LDAP
(Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) is a useful tool for
dealing with hierarchical data structures, SQL (Structured
Query Language) is often used with set based data.
Poised Solutions offers Database Administration and Database Development on all the databases described in the
books below, and is a SQL Developer. Poised Solutions tends to concentrate as a PostgreSQL Developer and SQLite Developer.
Database Book Reviews
- SQL Tuning
- The Definitive Guide to SQLite
The Definitive Guide to SQLite is the best book on SQLite that you
can currently find. The Definitive Guide to SQLite is therefore
a must have book for every SQLite Developer. The Definitive Guide to SQLite is also
an excellent introduction to SQL for any SQL Developer. SQLite is a high performance single user
(point of access) database, that requires minimal
configuration. SQLite is often used in embedded devices, and
is also a great accompaniment for many Development projects. SQLite can be used in Web Development, Project Management and Administration. SQLite is the Swiss Army Knife of
Database systems, very quickly implemented and deployed
wherever a data requirement exists.
- Database Design
Database Design is one of the best books on designing
databases. The databases explored and explained in Database
Design are RDBMS (Relational DataBase Management Systems) and
are therefore set based SQL style databases. Database Design
is a true classic for any Database Administrator to own, it steps the reader
through all the steps to create an enterprise level
database. Anyone involved in Database Development, or is a SQL Developer would be wise to own and read Database
Design, as it puts the design of database into a very clear
full and complete context.
- PostgreSQL
PostgreSQL is a great book about a great database.
PostgreSQL walks the road between being a tutorial and
reference book very well. All the major elements of the
PostgreSQL database are explored, and clear examples
throughout enable the reader to gain a clear understanding
of PostgreSQL. PostgreSQL is perhaps one of the best books
on PostgreSQL and if you are administering a PostgreSQL
database, or are a PostgreSQL Developer then it is good to have this book
close to hand. PostgreSQL is also quite a general book and
any SQL Developer or anyone involved in Database Administration or Database Development will find important concepts inside
of PostgreSQL that relate well to any database system.
- Deploying OpenLDAP
- Beginning Databases with PostgreSQL
- Teach Yourself SQL
Teach Yourself SQL is one of the best books on SQL (Structured Query Language), the language
found in most RDBMSs (Relational Database Management Systems).
Teach Yourself SQL is a fine read, there are some amusing
examples that perhaps mislead a little, but they are
actually accurate SQL. Overall Teach Yourself SQL is perhaps
one of the best books to read as an introduction to SQL, and
it is wise to work through the book at the same time as
reading it, a must have book for any serious SQL Developer and is very helpful for a lot of Database Administration or Database Development work.
- Oracle Database Administration
- SQL Programmer's Reference
SQL Programmer's Reference is a handy book to have around
for a SQL Developer or for Database Administration tasks. SQL Programmer's
reference covers mainly Oracle style SQL, though Informix
and Sybase are also covered. There is a standard of sorts in
SQL, and so a lot of the information works for other
databases, though this is not the central thrust. SQL
Programmer's Reference does what it says in the title it
acts as useful reference when constructing SQL
statements.
- Sybase SQL Server 11
- SQL Server 7 24 7
