Hardening Book Reviews
|
Hardening is the process by which computer systems, are
hardened against unauthorised access. The field of system
hardening is constantly evolving and new texts are often
produced to deal with the bugs in coding and the flaws in
architectural design that can be exploited to gain
unauthorized access. The Hardening books reviewed here cover
a wide spectrum of cyber security hardening methodologies
and philosophies.
Poised Solutions offers System Hardening as part of the Cyber Security and Adminstration suite of serivces. All elements of Cyber
Security (Computer Security) revolve around process though,
and whilst hardening is a useful exercise it should also be
revisited periodically as part of a good all round security
process.

- Secure Coding in C and C++
- Security Engineering
Security Engineering is a seminal read, and pretty much the
current bible on security practice and engineering. The
edition reviewed here is the second edition, and the quality
of information found within is only improving. Security
Engineering is one of those books that anyone serious about
security has read from cover to cover, brilliant classic
book on security.
- Security Warrior
- Hardening Linux
- Linux Firewalls
Linux Firewalls Attack Detection and Response with IPTables,
PSAD, and FWSnort is an exciting look into some of the more
advanced possibilities and techniques of Netfiler Firewall
configuration. Linux Firewalls is a comprehensive

- Network Security Bible
- Secure Coding
Secure coding is a relatively short book, though
comprehensive in its dealing with the art of secure coding.
Attack vectors are looked and the reasons behind them, then
secure architecture which is where security needs to start
to remove flaws, and then onto design, implementation and
testing. Secure coding is a concise and clear book on secure
coding practices and principles. If you code then this book
should be something you should use to review your progress
each step of the way.
- Linux Network Security
- Firewalls and Internet Security
- Network Security Assessment
- Beautiful Security
Beautiful Security is a collection of security essays that
explores some of the deeper and more esoteric elements of
cyber security. Beautiful Security is well written
throughout and engages the reader and builds up the jigsaw
of the emerging computer security field.
- Secrets and Lies Digital Security in a Networked World
- Linux Security Toolkit
- Schneier on Security
- Incident Response
- Apache Security
- Network Security Hacks
- Beyond Fear
- Linux iptables Pocket Reference
Linux iptables Pocket Reference (Firewalls, NAT and
Accounting) is a succinct explanation of how to configure
the Linux Kernel based firewall Netfilter using the standard
iptables userland configuration tool. Pocket References by
their very nature are short and to the point, Linux iptables
is also a sweet read and does a good job of explaining how
to use iptables.
